I purchased a Mr. Beer Kit over the Holidays. I really didn’t expect much from it. It’s just a plastic jug with a couple of packets of yeast and beer mixes. I also received a few plastic beer bottles and labels so I could make my own beer. What I didn’t count on was how much fun it was to make your own beer and serve it to your friends.
The first batch was a little too yeasty and the flavor was just ok. However, I also had a refill kit of American Devil IPA. This one was much better. Then I started to look at some of the other types of refill kits that were available and I was pleasantly surprised by the number of options.
Here’s where things started to take a turn. I was a book store wandering around and noticed a section on how to make your own beer. This wasn’t taking a refill kit and pouring it in a jug. These were actual recipes for many different types of beer. This opened up a world of freedom.
There were books that had recipes that were supposed to mirror the taste of commercially available beers. There were also books that had recipes on just the types of beers and offered ways to experiment.
This could get a little expensive. You see now that these options have been exposed to me, I think I’m hooked. I now have a new hobby. I’ll try to detail my successes and failures along the way.
