Make Beer At Home – Lager or Ale?
Save Money – Make Beer At Home!
Most of the people today, even the ones who already make beer at home, mistakenly distinguish beer only by color! In general there are two types of beer – Ale (top fermentation) and Lager (bottom fermentation).
The first fact is that lager beer can be both light and dark, the dark ones are usually German traditional lagers. Still most of the lagers are light beers and that’s why a dark lager might seem strange at first. The second fact is that lager is the most popular beer in the world. In the “beginning of beer” when the beer making equipment was not so advanced, ales ruled the world. But eventually some brewers found a new type of beer that needed to be stored for three weeks before consumption. Eventually this beer became lager (to store in German), the new beer was lighter than the usual ales and could be stored longer. After years of experimentation in 1842 Pilsner style (the most common lager recipe today) was finally pioneered in Czech Republic. The next real change came in 1953 when New Zealander Morton W. Coutts developed a process known as continuous fermentation. This process reduced the flavor, but allowed to speed up the production of beer. Lager is easier to when you make beer at home.
Make Beer At Home – What Is Stopping You?
With the new fast beer making process lager began rapidly spreading and became more popular than ale even in England (which was a pro-ale country all the way). Beside the production speed the lack of flavor also became an advantage, lot of people began viewing beer as a light refreshing drink and not as a heavy flavored brew. Of course you can enjoy beer even if you are not familiar with beer types, but understanding beer is very important if you want to start making beer at home or master a beer making kit.
